Apparently it’s normal for runners to lose toenails, particularly if you run ultras and suchlike. Failing that, it’s supposedly also normal to have at least one that is black, at any one time. But I haven’t – not even after my one and so far only marathon. I did get a slightly lilac-y hue on one toenail, but the nail itself stayed put.
Tonight I lost my first. And no, there’ll be no photographic evidence, it doesn’t look horrible at all so wouldn’t be any fun!
But the nail didn’t come off because of a running session across miles and miles of lovely countryside, or even a 12-hour race on a track. No, it was because of 5 miles of cross-country skiing over 3 months ago. (my boots were a half-size too small) Now - does that mean I’m not a real runner?
Gross.

ReplyDeletei can see where your running's heading ;-)
Ben: Not really! Looks about the same as with no nail...
ReplyDeleteDave: Well, since I can't seem go get any faster I might as well go longer... :)
