How to lose one’s mojo

Try Maffetone-style low pulse training!

After a week’s rest I’ve decided to bite the bullet and just get on with it, sore calf or not.

The Maffetone formula 180 minus one’s age put me at 143 (but I’m still 23, ok?) so I set garmin to beep at 150 just to give me space to even move. It kept beeping… I tried every kind of shuffle I could think of but the pulse was still high.

It was pouring down, which I normally love, but the whole idea was so depressing so I only did a short run as my first venture into Maffe-land. And looking at the stats, would you stick to it and hope for the benefits to show their pretty little faces or give up?

2.66K in nearly 23 minutes – that’s a 13.51 mile! I mean, really? I know I’m slow, but that slow is seriously not fun!

  1. that cant be good for your running can it!?
maybe it'll just take time for your body to adapt to what you're asking of it

  2. Dave: Don't think so, no. All I could think about was how I wanted to skip along and hop and skip over the puddles and just play in general. Boo. But people keep telling me to keep going and I guess I have to give it some time. I just need to find some roads with absolutely no people so I can stop worrying about looking like a right twat as I shuffle-walk-shuffle-stand-hobble-walk...

  3. Have you ever raced with an hrm? That would probably help you find your "easy hr zone" a bit more accurately. There are also other various tests/workouts out there that you can do with an hrm that might give you a different target hr. Maybe part of the issue here is too low of an hr? Just a thought. I've always read that you gotta stick with hr training to see the results-good luck!

  4. Lindsay: Yes, but I haven't done any kind of analysis so far. Longer reply to follow in its own post...
