Country roads...

The road to work doesn't seem too long when in the car or on the bus. Only about 28k, should be fine on the bike right? Right. My guide - on a racing-style bike and with legs to match - said convincingly that the scenic route through the woods was so much nicer and only about a kilometre longer. If you say so… Yes it was scenic, the roads were an ok mix of gravel, flat hard sand, mud, pine needle-covered paths, and all manner of animals were out (lambs, a donkey, horses, a dog, cats, cows, both red and roe deer), but it was no walk in the park. 28.6k - according to garmin - is a lot longer than it sounds, especially since I haven't done more than 15 for ages - several ages even. I don't really get any lactic acid when running (I must be taking it far too easy right?) but now it had an attack that nearly crippled me. And by then I was in a hurry too - I was meant to supervise job candidates doing IQ tests so had to be showered, dressed, had breakfast and generally sorted out aright about when we arrived at the office. Good thing I'm low maintenance in the beauty department! I had about 10 minutes to get ready and fetch the candidates so I had to bring my coffee and recovery drink into the classroom, but I don't think they noticed… My little bike is now resting next to my desk, and will get to come home with me tomorrow. I think my legs will thank me for that…
