I have the second race of the year coming up on Saturday, the Gothenburg Half Marathon. It'll be the third consecutive year I run this and I'm sad to say I haven't prepared anywhere near as much as I probably should. In fact, I haven't followed any kind of training programme, done anything specific, not bought new shoes - ok I know you're not meant to but new shoes for races but I simply mean that I'll run in the shoes I wore for this race last year, for my marathon, also last year, and they're not ratty but not new(ish) either - and I'm not doing any kind of tapering besides the fact that I've run less this past week and a half due to my silly leg.
Said leg isn't getting any better with rest (which is boring), it seems to like to be iced (so I'm doing that), it doesn't get worse when I run (am doing that, a little bit) and stretch and massage seems pretty indifferent (so am skipping that). Yesterday, after the group run, I ran it by coach Erik (literally) and he said if it doesn't get any worse when running when just run, so I'll see how it goes on Saturday.
Actually the leg seems to like speed more than slow running, and uphill better than downhill. The race is pretty flat, apart from two bridges and a few little inclines (course map and profile here), so I'll have to rely on my speed then. Ha, not too easy when you've got sausage dog legs. But I'm sure to beat at least a few of the other 58121 runners so it's all good!
Good luck with your race this weekend.
